“Okay what the hell just happened!?” Pyker jumped up screaming. He stared down at the broken T.V. and glass.
“Well, think about it this way, your birthday started off with a bang.” Connor joked kicking a piece of screen out of his way.
“Boys! What did you guys break!?” Susan Adams yelled up from the stairs.
“Nothing Mrs.Adams!” J.R called back.
“There goes our fun...wanna go to Death Cave?” Keafer asked. Referring to the caves that were hidden all over the island. Death Cave, was the oldest and deepest one. It was also a favorite among the four of them. The other three nodded and left, leaving the mess to be picked up later. They walk down both sets of stairs, keeping quite as they ran by Susan Adams in the living room. The house was a creepy silent, one that chilled your spine and caused goose bumps to appear. It had been like that ever since Marie's death. The island had seemed to grieve then move on, but at the Adams' house there was no bouncing back to their old life. Most of their time at home Connor and Pyker spent in their rooms, Pyker watching T.V while his little brother stared out the window or at the wall. Luckily they only had to spend holidays at home, the rest of the school year they were in their dorms at Spencer.
Once they had made it out the door they walked up to the Dodge Charger,
“When was the last time we actually went down to the cave?” Pyker said opening the door to his new car and getting in. Connor and Keafer were in the back, while J.R rode shotgun.
“Like three years ago or something.” J.R mumbled. Pyker was possibly one of the worst drivers around, he drove way too fast and often forgot to stop at stop signs. J.R was the one who did most of the driving. They drove with the music blasting, and the windows down allowing the cold, thick fog to seep in.
"Did you see how Ruby was dressed today? She raised the word 'slut' to an all new level." Pyker said taking his eyes off the road to look at his friends.
"Yea, well that's Ruby for ya." J.R replied shaking his head in disapproval.
"You know what she asked me last week in Science class? If an apple was a fringing planet!?" They all laughed at Connor's remark. He had Ruby in all of his classes, and in each one she always tried to sit beside him. Which drove him up the wall. Everytime he saw here he felt the undeniable urge to choke her with his school tie and if it wasn't for his brother he probably would have a long time ago.
"She's only trying to impress you little bro." Connor leaned forward and punched Pyker in the arm hard.
"Hey, no hitting the driver!"
"Didn't you have a crush on her in grade one J.R?" Keafer asked jokingly, smiling at the face J.R made when he asked.
"Shut up, I so did not." J.R muttered.
"Sure you didn't." Pyker, Keafer and Connor all smirked.
All Essife shops were closed for the night. The only light coming from the street lamps and almost full moon. The road was deserted, when out of nowhere a misty figure appeared only a few feet in front of them.
“Pyker look out!” Connor yelled.
“SHIT!” Pyker cursed, pressing on the gas pedal quickly. The car stopped causing them to jerk forward. As quickly as the person had came in front, they were no where to be seen.
“Ouch...Jesus where the hell did that dude come from?” Keafer wondered rubbing his forehead where it had hit the back of Pyker’s seat.
“I think I just had a heart attack.” Connor panted running a hand through his hair, he let out a long sigh and leaned his head back. Pyker had both of his hands planted firmly to the wheel. J.R turned to face the back.
“You guys okay?”
“We’re fine.” Keafer had his eyes glued out the windshield, his blue eyes wide. “But that thing isn’t.”
“What are you talking about?” J.R returned to facing the front. “Oh...that.” Standing in front of them was the very same thing they had almost hit. It didn’t look like either male or female, but had human features. It had lightly tanned skin leathery against the bones in it’s face, dark mournful eyes, mouth turned down into a frown. It’s medium brown hair was caked in dry and wet blood. You could almost look through it.
The creature moved towards them, one bony arm outstretched. It didn't walk, but floated on the fog.
“Ahh!” They all screamed in surprise. Pyker put his car in reverse and backed away keeping one eye on the thing and the other on the mirror.
“What the hell?!” J.R and Connor declared at the same time. Spinning the vehicle towards the road they had just came down, the newly eighteen year old pressed down roughly on the gas pedal. All the while swearing under his breath. Connor and J.R turned in their seats to see if the thing was still following them. It wasn’t, instead it stood in the middle of the dirt road watching them go.
“What…the…hell…was…that?” Keafer whispered, too afraid to look back.
“It kinda looked like Ruby. Maybe it was the ghost of her brain in human form.” Connor joked trying to lighten the situation. Keafer and J.R smirked, but Pyker reached back and slapped him across the head.
“Shut up Connor.”
“Once again I ask, what the hell was that?” Keafer repeated.
“Maybe it was just the fog. That on top of all the caffeine we drank.” That was J.R always trying to calm them down using his smarts.
“How can fog make itself into a…thing like that!?” Pyker questioned his best friend angrily. “I am officially creeped out. First the T.V, now the fog thing!” He turned into his house’s drive-though and turned the engine off. They sat in silence all lost in their thoughts. Closing his eyes the dead face of the creature popped into Connor thoughts. He snapped his eyes open and looked at his brother, who still seemed to be in shock.
Else where, fifteen year old Ruby Tapeworth walked home fuming over the fact that her mom had yet again forgotten to pick her up. She was not wearing the proper attire for walking - boots with a three-inch heel. The fog floating in from the ocean made her shiver, pulling her coat tighter around herself. Another wave of fog hit colder than the first. Foot steps behind her echoed against the rocks. She whipped around hoping to surprise her follower, but there was no one behind her or anywhere else on the road.
“Hello?” She asked, “Is anyone there?” No response. The footsteps grew louder with each breath she took. Deciding she wanted to surprise her stalker, she turned around. But saw nothing but fog. 'Their hiding from...me?!' she thought bitterly.
“Connor? That better not be you! If it is I swear I’ll…” She didn’t get to finish as a foggy shape appeared in front of her. She could smell the sea coming off of it. She screamed as loud as she could. The ghostly figure silenced her by dragging it’s nails into Ruby’s neck slowly. It’s fingers leaving behind three thin gashes, blood dripping dyeing her once white coat, dark red. A gasp escaped her mouth, she fell to her knees, her blood still spilling onto her clothes. She started to choke on the thick substance filling her mouth. The fog lifted, leaving her desperately trying to get air to her lungs. With a last breath she pitched forward into the snow. Her eyes remained open, the death showing in the emptiness of them.
The air returned to it’s normal cold temperature. The sun rose over the hills around Essife, sending rays of sun across the dead body. In a matter of hours, the island people would be getting up to go to work, instead they would find the lifeless body of a Spencer Academy student.
